Conference Day 1

Updated: Nov 16, 2022

Today was the first day of the PRSSA ICON Conference. We attended the opening general session where Kent Landers spoke about dealing with the ever-changing situations PR professionals deal with. We also did our school roll call. We took a break for lunch and went to Chick-fil-a.

In the afternoon we attended three different breakout sessions with different presenters from companies or agencies. For the first session, I decided to attend “When Worlds Take Flight: Communications for Delta Airlines” by Gina Laughlin and Savannah Huddleston. They talked about how Delta handled the Covid-19 crisis in the best ways they could and fared better than other airlines with not having to lay off a ton of people. I really was impressed by the video they showed and how good their storytelling was.

The second session I went to was “How to Communicate Luxury” by Suzanne Droese. I really liked this session. She was extremely knowledgeable and was good at walking us through what luxury PR was, what it consisted of, and how to be successful in it. She really showed how you can achieve these goals that may seem inaccessible and work for these huge brands.

The third session I went to was “How Gen Z is changing PR and Social Media for Good” by Matt Prince. Matt has worked for Disney and currently works for TacoBell. He talked a lot about how you have to adapt to the new trends in media and how it is so much easier for the public to express feedback, like with the Mexican Pizza debacle. I thought it was cool how they

took the public response and run with it to

turn it into a campaign and re-release.

Overall, I thought the sessions today were great! I feel like I learned a lot about the different aspects of PR.
